iCaster makes use of several technologies such as ip multicast, unicast stream splitting trees and peer to peer relays. All this happens dynamically and transparent to the user. |

Some other content delivery systems rely solely on multicast, they suffer from the fact that not all segments in a given network are guaranteed to be connected using multicast capable routers. These segments form multicast islands; they allow multicast traffic to flow within them but not between them. Hence these third party systems fall short of providing an integral enterprise wide solution which could potentially span wide area networks. |

On the other hand iCaster can use multicast if available within multicast islands, multicast tunnels between islands and unicast stream splitting between individual segregated nodes. |
